First collect the essential requirements
Which criteria are mandatory? They may include a specific part position, surfaces that must stay free, an existing machine holder or process conditions. Separate these points from wishes that would merely make handling more convenient. This keeps it clear whether a standard carrier is really ruled out or would just need to be organised differently.
Check the standard solution realistically
A well-known product can allow clear order assignment and easier reordering. These advantages must be confirmed in the specific quotation. Technically, what matters is whether the existing geometry works. Forcing the part to fit in a way that later requires additional handling should be made visible as a separate effort.
When a customised holder can become relevant
If the part needs a specific orientation, may only rest on a few points or has to be removed under tight access conditions, an adapted geometry can make sense. Development, tooling or manufacturing costs and changes must be taken into account. Whether such a solution can be offered has to be clarified separately; it is not a guaranteed part of the MFP range.
Five comparison questions
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does the geometry fit? | Basic technical prerequisite |
| Does removal work? | Interface to the workflow |
| How many carriers are needed? | Impact on stock and costs |
| How does reordering work? | Availability for later needs |
| What happens when the part changes? | Effort over the life cycle |
Consider part families
A carrier for several part variants can be attractive organisationally. However, it should be assessed for all intended variants. Identify the least favourable cases: largest part, smallest support, highest contour or most sensitive surface. A single successful loading does not prove the whole part family.
Combine the decision with a sample and a cost picture
Assess the technical function first. Then compare quotations and the expected effort in operation. Document which requirements are met and which restrictions are accepted. This keeps the decision understandable even if a new variant or a different process is added later.
