Identification links parts to their order

A workpiece carrier can provide a clear place to put parts. For parts to stay assigned to an order, however, the process needs additional information. Model number, carrier number, batch and inspection status serve different purposes and should not be confused.

Distinguish four levels of information

The product designation describes the type of pallet, for example MFP 1. An individual carrier ID identifies a specific pallet. Order or batch identify the assigned parts. The status describes the current state, such as provided or still to be inspected. Which levels are needed depends on your process.

Create the link when loading

Define when and by whom the link between parts and carrier is created. A document must belong to the actual load and must not be carried over unintentionally from a previous order. Partial quantities or several orders on one carrier require a particularly clear rule. A pocket layout alone does not create this information.

Handovers are critical points

The assignment should be kept at every change of workstation. Describe which information is handed over and how it is confirmed at removal. Refilling, rework and remaining quantities are particularly important. If parts change carrier, their information must move with them traceably.

Choose identification to suit the process

A paper document, a label or a digitally captured code can be more or less suitable depending on the application. Contact with media, temperature and readability must be considered. MFP pallets have their own label area at the edge; whether a particular label there also withstands cleaning and temperature is best tested in your own process.

Regulate returns

Before reloading, it must be clear whether an old status is still valid. Define when order information is removed or closed and when a carrier is available again. Conspicuous or blocked pallets should not be recognisable only by their position in the room if they can be moved.

A small example

A pallet carries order A up to an inspection. One part is removed for rework, the rest is passed on. The process must show which quantity still belongs to order A and what status it has. A fixed carrier ID can help, but replaces neither the quantity booking nor the status decision.

Traceability is a system achievement

It results from identification, data capture and processes that are followed. A pallet alone is not “traceable” in the sense of complete process documentation. So define the assignment you need concretely and involve production and quality assurance.

Barcode and RFID on MFP flat pallets

MFP pallets carry a barcode label with a serial number – giving each pallet its own identity that can be linked to order and batch. For medical technology, the pallets can additionally be retrofitted with an RFID chip for tracking the parts. You add readers, software and the assignment in the process within your own system; we are happy to coordinate the identification with you.
