Glossary: terms relating to workpiece carriers

Short explanations for product selection and technical coordination. The terms describe general relationships; specific MFP properties are clarified based on the chosen version.

Approval

Documented decision for a defined use. It should clearly link product revision, part and conditions.

Article number

Unique commercial identification of a product variant. For reorders, the complete number should be used together with model and version.

Batch

Quantity of parts grouped according to criteria defined by the company. Its assignment must be kept in the material flow where required.

Circulation / return

Route of a carrier until it is available again. Inspection, cleaning and waiting time can be part of this process.

Classic

Grey version of MFP flat pallets with its own article number (for example 80997157 for the MFP 1 Classic). The white version is called Standard/pearl white.

Cleaning pallet

Workpiece carrier in which parts remain during cleaning. MFP flat pallets are designed for cleaning the parts in the pallet in an ultrasonic bath and for washing and drying up to 89 °C.

Component protection

Planning and assessment of the effects on a part. These include, for example, contact points, movement and possible contamination; the criteria depend on the application.

Cycle time

Time until a carrier in use is available again for the next loading. It includes waiting and return times.

ESD

Electrostatic discharge. For sensitive components, suitable electrical properties and the complete protection concept must be clarified.

Flat pallet

Flat load or workpiece carrier. On flachpaletten.de, this refers to MFP flat pallets for small parts: plastic pallets with a 383 × 281.3 mm footprint and a height of 14 to 26 mm – not to be confused with load carriers in Euro pallet format.

Gripper

Component of a handling system for picking up a workpiece. Contact surfaces, access and part position must be coordinated with the carrier.

Grid pallet

Workpiece carrier with regularly arranged holding places. With MFP, the five models differ in pocket dimensions and number of places – from 408 to 24; the 383 × 281.3 mm footprint stays the same.

Grid pitch

Distance of a repeating pattern. It is not automatically the free width of a pocket; the reference points must be clear.

Handling

Manipulation of parts or carriers, for example picking up, moving, aligning and placing. The term can cover manual and automated processes.

Identification

Information for identification or status. Product number, individual carrier ID and order assignment serve different purposes.

Intralogistics

In-house organisation of material and information flows. Workpiece carriers are possible aids within these processes.

Loading

Arrangement and number of parts on a workpiece carrier. Changing the loading can change handling and the effect in the process.

Machine loading

Feeding and providing parts at a machine or system. This includes positioning the carrier and the takeover of the workpiece by the following system.

Material flow

Route of the parts through the stations involved. Waiting places and returns belong to the planning of the carrier cycle.

Media resistance

Suitability of a material under specifically named contact conditions. Medium, concentration, temperature, duration and other loads must be known.

MFP

Manz Flachpalette (Manz flat pallet): product family of five grid pallets (MFP 0 to MFP 4) with the same footprint and different pocket sizes. The model designation is embossed on every pallet.

Outer size

Dimension of the outer carrier contour. For the machine holder, projections, feet or other geometric features can also be relevant.

Part position

Position and orientation of a workpiece in the carrier. Possible changes after transport or process steps must be considered in the assessment.

Parts carrier

General term for an aid for holding parts. The specific design and suitability depend on the respective product.

Pick-and-place

Automated picking up and placing. For the application, carrier position, workpiece position and gripper movement must match.

Pocket

Holding area for a workpiece. Depending on the system, the term is used for a compartment or for a holder more closely adapted to the contour.

Pocket size

Dimension of the holding area of a pocket. For selection, what counts is the usable geometry in the intended part position.

Process parameter

Described condition of a process, such as time, temperature or loading. Comparable trials need traceable parameters.

Referencing

Assignment to defined position references in a machine. It supports predictable positioning of the carrier or part.

Removal clearance

Space needed in addition to the part for hand, tool or gripper. It should be considered when choosing the pocket geometry.

Sample testing

Test of a specific combination of product and part under defined conditions. The result and open points are documented.

Standard/pearl white

White version of MFP flat pallets with its own article number (for example 81559698 for the MFP 1). The grey version is called Classic.

Support

Surface or structure on which a part or the carrier rests. The support influences contact points and the situation under load.

Traceability

Traceable assignment within a documented system. It results from information and processes, not from a pallet alone.

Workpiece carrier

Aid for holding, providing or passing on workpieces. Which processes are possible depends on version and application.
